          Feel the Eee PC Love!

I love my ASUS Eee PC! If you have one, you probably do too. There's a lot to love about these small but capable computers. The only thing I would like to change is the name, from "Eee PC" to "eeePC," which is visually pleasing and easier-to-type.

If you landed here looking for information about upgrading your Eee PC, keep in mind that my upgraded components are specifically for the Eee PC 900A. Please check your manual or equipment specifications before ordering the same SSD or a new RAM module.

I've been looking at the Asus Transformer and Asus Prime tablets of late, but haven't made the plunge yet. I was waiting to see if the new iPad would include the conveniences I'm looking for, such as easy external storage, as well as looks. It doesn't. Nevertheless, I'm still on the fence about the utility of an expensive tablet versus an ultraportable computer. Is extreme coolth worth it, since I already have a color Nook?

Getting started with an Eee PC 900A

The Eee PC 900A is a sturdy little ultraportable computer. It's good looking and fits easily into a small tote or backpack. This particular model of the Eee PC is pre-configured with the Landros distribution of the Linux operating system, a 4GB SSD card and 1GB of memory. Out of the box, it's reasonably fast and very reliable. However, to get the most out of what is a good basic machine with a flawed configuration, I upgraded the operating system and added an SDHC card for additional storage. A few tweaks took it from adorable to truly useful.

          Upgrading the Eee PC 900A

The Eee PC 900A can do just about anything with the addition of memory and storage upgrades. I added a 32GB SSD and replaced the 1GB RAM module with 2GB. The upgrades are a good investment and extend the usable life of the computer. My only regret is that I didn't upgrade sooner.

Run Ubuntu 10.04 on Your Eee PC

          Picture
Soon after upgrading the memory and SSD on my Eee PC, I began seeing notices in the Update Manager about installing a newer version of Ubuntu. For a while I ignored them and stuck with Easy Peasy. But the seeds had been sown. Would it be possible to run a grown-up version of Ubuntu Linux on my Lilliputian computer? Would it be more useful? Yes! and Yes! Go to the full article...

The Eee PC as a Primary Computer by CJ Allan

I'm not using my Eee PC as my main computer, but I know someone who does. CJ Allan, who writes about Kindle publishing at CJ's Easy as Pie, has designed a setup with the Eee PC 900HD that works very well in a small space and does just about everything. She shares her experience and recommendations in this guest article.

"My decision to use the Asus Eee PC 900HD netbook as my primary computer came in a series of small steps, small discoveries, actually, as I came to realize that the little computer I had regarded as "cute", and "OK for travel", is actually a powerful machine."
